Captain Heather Baze, Core Officer for the Sierra Vista Salvation Army, was in the studio to talk about their Yard Sale this Saturday.

Baze: Unfortunately, we are not opening the thrift store, people still ask us quite often, but throughout this year, we have been collecting donations, and we will be having a two-day yard sale this weekend (the 28th and the 29th) from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. During that time, well on Friday, we will not be having our community meals. Many of our friends that come for lunch will be getting a sack lunch on Thursday so that we can still provide lunch for them on Friday, even though we'll be having the yard sale. We will be doing a fundraiser for our men's ministries. While our men's ministries is doing a fundraiser in connection with the yard sale, with hot dogs, chips and a drink.

Where will the yard sale be?

Baze: It will be at 180 Wilcox at the Salvation Army Community Center. We have cribs. We have lots of different baby stuff, car seats, lots of kitchen appliances, and all kinds of knickknacks. Pretty much everything. We have lots of clothes; lots and lots and lots of clothes. All the clothes will be a dollar.

How does the community help the Salvation Army?

Baze: We are really struggling in our food pantry. Our food pantry has been very low with the amount of families having to come in due to the increase in the grocery stores and the cutting of food stamps. We've had a lot more families, and we've been blessed that we've been able to help them, but our pantry is very low.

How can the community donate food to the pantry?

Baze: They can look at our website. We have a list of all the items. Examples include soup, peanut butter and Jelly, cereal, spaghetti, Mac and cheese, and vegetables. Cans of fruit, all kinds of different things. For our homeless bags, we do top ramen and cans that can open from the top, easy stuff that they can open because they don't have a kitchen. They can donate them to the Salvation Army, 180 Wilcox in Sierra Vista.
