Riding a Bicycle in Arizona: The Rules of the Road

Seasoned cyclists are very adept and knowledgeable when it comes to working with traffic and adhering to the rules of the road, but they seem to be the exception.

Riding a bicycle in Arizona is a responsibility, and it's good to know the rules for safety and over-the-road communication, especially if you're planning to ride in traffic.

Are Bicycle Helmets Required in Arizona?

While most people wear helmets when riding bicycles nowadays, Arizona doesn't have a statewide helmet law for cyclists. However, some Arizona cities do.

If you're under 18 and riding in Tucson, Sierra Vista, or Yuma, you must wear a helmet. Even if you're not required to wear a bike helmet, it's a good idea for safety reasons.

Is it Legal to Ride a Bike on the Sidewalk in Arizona?

My city has some beautiful shared-use paths. They're very popular, and I often see people pushing strollers, walking dogs, and riding bicycles along these routes. They're nice, wide, paved paths that protect everyone from traffic.

Sidewalks are much harder to share with walkers and other users, so the question is, are you legally allowed to ride your bicycle on a sidewalk in Arizona?

Again, it depends on where you are. There are no statewide laws against riding your bicycle on the sidewalk, but some cities have their own rules. For example, cities like Phoenix, Tucson, and Sierra Vista allow it unless a sign states otherwise. Always check local regulations to be sure.

If you're going through a crosswalk, you can ride your bike from one sidewalk to the other, but if there are pedestrians present, you might have to get off and walk your bike across so everyone stays safe.

Do You Have to Follow the Rules of the Road on a Bicycle in Arizona?

You might not be able to ride on a sidewalk, which means you have to take to the road. At this point, you're considered a vehicle and part of traffic, and you'll need to follow the rules of the road.

First, you have to follow the flow of traffic. That means riding on the right side of the street, as close to the curb as possible. This helps keep you visible and predictable to drivers. You probably know that when you walk along a roadway, you should always walk toward oncoming traffic, but bicycles are different.

Since you're part of the traffic on the road, you'll have to signal your turns, just like vehicles, so drivers know what you're doing.

Here are the basic hand signals:

  • Right Turns: Extend your right hand at a right angle, with a flat palm and fingers pointing upward.
  • Left Turns: Extend your left hand straight out to the left.
  • Slowing or stopping: Extend your left arm out at a right angle with a flat palm, fingers pointing either straight up or down towards the road.

What happens if you don't follow the rules?

You can get fined, just like drivers. It's illegal to run a red light or blow through a stop sign—just like in a car. Violating the law will get you ticketed—and the fine is at least $85!

You also have to have a seat and a working bell on your bike. Missing either of these could get you fined, too. Before you feel the wind in your hair, stay safe! Wear a helmet, and know the road rules on your bike!
