Over the years, I’ve watched Cochise County grow. After nearly 30 years, I’ve seen our county attract more and more experts from around the country, and much of that growth is tied to the county’s largest employer: Fort Huachuca.

New Growth and Expansion for Cochise County

With the announcement of a new mission for the U.S. Space Force, KJZZ reports that the project could have an even greater impact on Cochise County.

As the assignment continues to expand, the growth will bring more customers to local restaurants, shops, contractors, real estate agents, and other small businesses. Since Fort Huachuca is already the county’s biggest employer, new missions could bring more workers, families, and money into our local economy.

A New Mission and a Strong University Partnership

At the urging of Arizona Congressman Juan Ciscomani, the Department of Defense selected Fort Huachuca for a new Space Domain Awareness mission.

This mission focuses on tracking satellites and monitoring space activity to support communications, navigation, and national security. Officials say the project will help analyze sensor data and give us a clearer picture of what’s happening in space.

This military mission includes a partnership with the University of Arizona. The university signed an $8.6 million cooperative agreement with the U.S. Space Force to develop technology and conduct research supporting Space Domain Awareness as part of the mission at Fort Huachuca.

The project will tap into the university’s strengths in astronomy, optics, and space science, as well as existing and future research. The partnership is intended to build military and civilian talent for high-tech defense and aerospace jobs.

An Exciting Opportunity for Cochise County

This is an exciting opportunity for Cochise County. When high-paying technology and defense jobs come to a community, the benefits will no doubt reach beyond the fort. I can’t wait to see how this partnership helps to grow our area.
