Fall in Arizona: Fun Autumn Activities Locals Look Forward To
I love fall, especially in Arizona. I know you probably expected me to say that, compared to places like Vermont or Washington state, Arizona’s fall… falls short, but I disagree. Fall in Arizona is lovely; you have to adjust your expectations.
Most people think of our state as nothing but heat, but if you’ve lived here a long time, you know that fall is when Arizona really comes alive. The temperatures finally start to cool down; we spend less time indoors, and it's the perfect season to get back outside and enjoy everything the state has to offer.

Rodeo Season Returns
One of my favorite signs of fall is the return of rodeo season. Suddenly, rodeo events like the Sonoita Labor Day Rodeo return to Arizona, bringing together all my favorite adrenaline rushes—bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, and more—all wrapped in Western tradition.
It's a fun way to celebrate our state's ranching heritage and the return to cooler weather. Even if this is your first rodeo, the energy and excitement make it a great fall outing.

Pumpkin Picking and Family Fun
Fall is also the perfect time for apple and pumpkin picking. Farms like Apple Annie's, Schnepf Farms, and the Marana Pumpkin Patch are some of the best places to create lasting family memories.
Plan to spend the day picking out the perfect pumpkin, enjoying fresh-baked pie, or just enjoying the cooler outdoors—it's a wonderful Arizona fall experience.
Time to Hit the Trails Again
You know how you have to plan outdoor activities before the heat hits and after the hottest time of the day? That changes as the fall temperatures return. As the thermometer drops, it’s time to head back out to the hiking and biking trails.
After months of summer heat, it's a relief to lace up those hiking boots and explore Arizona’s beautiful scenery again. Choose your adventure: mountain paths or desert landscapes. Fall is one of the best times to get outside. Just remember to bring plenty of water, because it’s not as hot as it gets, but it’s still very warm!

Cooler Weather at Last
The best part of all may be the cooler weather itself. After weeks of triple-digit temperatures following the unpredictable drama of afternoon monsoon thunderstorms, even a clear day in the 80s feels amazing.
Fall in Arizona may look different from what it does nearly anywhere else, but that's part of what makes it so special.
