Did an Arizona Truck Driver Spot a Ghost on this Dark Desert Highway?
On a Dark Desert Highway
Outside of our large cities in Arizona, you'll find vast stretches of dark, empty roads. If you've ever driven these unlit roadways, you can attest to the eeriness that falls across the landscape. The creepiness is thicker than your headlights.
Legends and stories have cropped up for decades, especially along this lonely stretch of road in the Arizona desert.
A figure in white walking along a deserted highway. Stories of drivers picking up a hitchhiker, who later disappears. Only later does the driver question if the person was real - or a phantom.
Dash Cams: The Silent Witness
Stories of ghostly figures traversing the road have been around as long as there have been drivers and roadways. These days, a lot of drivers have installed dash cameras.
The cameras are mostly used as silent, ever-vigilant witnesses in the event of an accident or other strange occurrence. They're especially useful where human eye-witness testimony could be colored by emotion or late-night fatigue.
What Was That?
While driving down Arizona State Route 87 between Payson and Phoenix last March, William Church spotted something he couldn't quite explain. He had to review the dash cam footage just to make sure he wasn't seeing things.
- The camera footage shows a bright light on the side of the road.
- As the truck approaches, the figure appears the be someone walking along the empty stretch of highway.
- As the truck approaches, the person doesn't appear to be solid.
Did He See a Ghost?
As the truck passes, the ghostly figure appears to flash, then vanish.
State Route 87 is one of Arizona's most dangerous roadways. This area in particular has been the site of many car accidents. William Church is not the first person to report possible ghostly sitings in this area. Over the years, many locals believe this stretch of road could be haunted.
