Patterson Observatory Public Viewing Nights at UArizona

There’s nothing quite like our beautiful night skies in Arizona, and if you happen to live in Southeastern Arizona, you’re in for a local treat.

A Hidden Jewel

The Patterson Observatory on the University of Arizona Sierra Vista Campus is a hidden jewel in our community. The impressive 20-inch, research-grade telescope found in the buildings iconic silver dome originally came from a dedicated local astronomer and longtime Huachuca Astronomy Club member, David Healy, from Healy’s own Junk Bond Observatory located in Hereford until 2004.

Patterson Observatory Public Nights

Patterson Observatory Public nights happen approximately once a month, and are scheduled on or near the new moon, when the skies are dark enough to view a variety of objects. See nebulae, the rings of Saturn, distant galaxies and stars. Admission is free and family friendly, but fills up quickly and registration is required, and participants will need a receipt to get in.

All HAC Public Nights are weather dependent and if the sky is even partly cloudy visitors should check the recording at (520) 458-8278 x 2214 for a cancelation notice.

If You Go

Register ahead of time and get there a little early. The schedule is subject to change, so be sure to check their website for the latest information and activities. It’s always a good idea to bring layers, because the temperature can drop pretty quickly once the sun sets. There are stairs to get up to the big telescope, so wearing comfortable, stable shoes is good advice.

Be sure to bring your astronomy-related questions. The members of HAC are extremely knowledgeable and always love to spread the astronomical education!
