The Gray Hawk Nature Center and the Bisbee Science Exploration and Research Center are two amazing organizations here in Cochise County that provide opportunities for curious minds and aspiring scientists to learn about the world around them. Both of these organizations were at the YES fair public viewing day, where I asked them about their programs and their missions. Here's what I learned!

Gray Hawk Nature Center

Did you know Arizona has one of the most diverse rattlesnake populations in the world? I didn't until I talked to Treven, an Educational Specialist with the Gray Hawk Nature Center. The Gray Hawk Nature Center is a 501C3, non-profit organization that strives to educate people of all ages in our community. They teach people about rattlesnakes, as well as other wildlife present in our community.

Aside from educating the community, Gray Hawk Nature Center also rehabilitates rattlesnakes. According to Sandy, the founder of Gray Hawks Nature Center, within recent months, they received multiple rattlesnakes that were confiscated by the Sierra Vista Police Department during a drug bust. They have since rehabilitated these snakes and use them to educate the community on specific species.

When asked about future hopes and goals for Gray Hawk, Treven told me, "Every riparian zone needs to have a nature center. It's so important for people like you and everybody else to have a place for peace, relaxation, and education." If you are interested in visiting the Gray Hawk Nature Center, it is located at 3918 N Gray Hawk Ln in Sierra Vista.

Bisbee Science Exploration and Research Center

The Bisbee Science Lab is an organization whose mission is to encourage scientific exploration. They have free events such as tutoring, hands-on science activities, and astronomy presentations. This organization is also a 501c3 non-profit organization. They have events such as Science Fridays and Pie and Sky.

I talked to Summer, a member of Bisbee Science Exploration and Research Center, who told me that they not only have their own location, but they also travel to local schools and educate students on all sorts of topics, such as hydrology and desert adaptations!

The Bisbee Science Lab is open every Friday from 10-1 p,m and if you want to swing by and check them oiut they are located at 519 Melody Lane in Bisbee!
