What Sheriff Dannels Said About Governor Hobbs's Sierra Vista Visit

Governor Katie Hobbs visited Sierra Vista this week to meet with leaders from Cochise County, law enforcement, and the military. They talked about border operations, local needs, and Arizona’s efforts to get reimbursed for years of border-security costs.

Hobbs focused her visit on Arizona’s request for over $900 million from the federal government. The state wants to recover money that taxpayers spent on work that should have been handled by the federal government.

Some of the requested funds would go to counties and local agencies that have helped deal with border-related crime, drug trafficking, and human smuggling.

What They Talked About

Sheriff Mark Dannels talked about the governor’s visit during an interview with Grady Butler on the radio show First Watch on KWCD.

Dannels said Hobbs toured the Border Operations Center and met with police chiefs, county officials, and others to see how the center works and what support is still needed. He added that the center serves more than just Cochise County.

“So that’s what that center represents, not just Cochise County, but it’s beyond,” Dannels said. He described the meeting as productive and said Hobbs wanted to see the situation for herself.

The Border Picture Now

Dannels said the border situation is more manageable now than in past years, but there is still work to do. He explained that drug smuggling is still a big concern because it can be harder to detect than human smuggling.

“It’s one-of-a-kind, and it’s saving lives every day,” Dannels said of the center.

Keeping The Funding Flowing

Dannels said his job is to make sure local agencies have the resources they need, no matter the politics involved. “My job is to ensure that we have the funding to do the job to protect our citizens and protect that quality of life,” he said.
