Getting There is Half the Fun! 4 Scenic Arizona Road Trips You Won’t Forget
You've heard the expression, "It's the journey, not the destination"?
Well, in Arizona, it's both. We may have more than our fair share beautiful destinations here in Arizona, but the trip to get there is just as incredible as the featured landmark.
After all, how many states have places as beautiful as Sedona and Flagstaff. Or how about the natural wonder that sets the standard for inspiration across the world? I'm talking about the Grand Canyon, and if you've ever been, you know there's nowhere like it in the world.
With such scenic destinations, is it even fair that the drive itself is also beautiful? Why not make your summer road trop an experience to remember? Here are some of the best road trips right here in Arizona.
Road Trip from Phoenix to Sedona
There's no place on earth quite as magical as Sedona. This trip is filled with stunning views like Cathedral Rock, Devil's Bridge, and Bell Rock. Whether you're searching for some great outdoor hikes, want to experience the vortexes, or if you're looking for some relaxation, there's something here for everyone.
This road trip begins in Phoenix, and you'll travel through beautiful scenic country for about 120 miles on the way to Sedona.
Take the Drive from Sedona to Grand Canyon
We're willing to bet you won't find a more scenic drive in Arizona - and quite possibly, the world - than the one you'll take to the Grand Canyon, if you start in Sedona.
As you make you way to the Grand Canyon, you'll experience some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The trip will take you a little over two hours, but you'll travel through breathtaking country. The petrified forest and the Painted Desert sound enchanting, but there's nothing like taking in the Vermilion Cliffs in person.
History is Waiting from Tucson to Tombstone
What about a road trip filled with history and culture?
Travel from Tucson to Tombstone and you'll see beautiful landscapes...but Walk Where They Fell in the Town Too Tough to Die and you'll discover a gold mine of history that includes gun-slinging, ladies of the night, and much more in the legendary Old West ghost town - Tombstone.
See the Climate Change from Phoenix to Flagstaff
If you say Arizona to outsiders, it probably brings to mind the arid desert, saguaro cactus and scorching hot days.
But have you ever imagined pine forests, moose or rainy days? BestPlaces.net says that compared to Phoenix, Flagstaff has 125% more rainy days, and 11% fewer sunny days than Phoenix does in over an average year.
The average temperature in Flagstaff is wildly cooler than Phoenix, so it's hard to believe they're in the same state, much less a short drive apart. In July, while the temperature soars to around 105 or hotter in Phoenix, you'll sit at a cool 83 degrees in Flagstaff.
It's a short jump from the low subtropical desert climate in Phoenix to the high, mountainous altitudes of the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff and you can make it in less than two hours' drive!
