Arizona Drivers Encouraged To Obtain REAL ID For Seamless Travel

It's been buzzing for a while: Arizona plans to replace the standard driver's license with a REAL ID. When the Covid pandemic shut everything down, the compliance date was moved forward, but that extra time is expiring.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) wants you to know that the clock is ticking for Arizona residents. Drivers will have to get their new REAL ID-compliant licenses by May 7, 2025.

Why is Arizona Requiring the REAL ID?

So, why the change? Arizona Central reports that the statewide change stems from the federal REAL ID Act passed in 2005 following the 9/11 attacks.

Back then, the government decided to standardize the process of issuing driver's licenses and state IDs to bolster national security.
