Phoenix Wants to Extend Free Eviction Help for Renters

How The Program Helps Renters

It’s been really difficult to stay on top of rising rents, especially in the Phoenix Metropolitan area, where costs are rising.  Phoenix's Eviction Legal Services Program provides free help to eligible residents facing eviction.

Depending on your situation, legal help is available. Renters may be eligible for legal representation in court, mediation services to resolve disputes with landlords, or post-eviction assistance to help them get back on their feet and find new housing.

The program is available at no cost to qualifying residents.

Phoenix Leaders Want To Keep It Going

Phoenix Vice Mayor Kesha Hodge Washington wants to make sure the city can continue to help its citizens beyond June 2027, when the current funding is expected to expire.

So far, city leaders are happy with the program's results. Nearly one in two participants have had a favorable outcome when they’ve asked for assistance from the program. Since January 2025, the program has received more than 750 applications and has referred hundreds of residents to services.

Housing stability has been a major factor for individuals and families all across the state, and officials say it affects everything from employment and education to family well-being. Affordable housing is still a major concern, so programs like this are very helpful.

What Does the Program Do?

According to Phoenix.gov, the Eviction Legal Services Program “assists Phoenix residents experiencing a current eviction crisis.”

Residents who are eligible for the program might be able to “…receive access to full or limited legal representation at court, mediation outside of a courtroom proceeding, or post-eviction services to address possible impediments to future renting opportunities.” There is no charge to residents for these services.

The program helps Phoenix residents who are facing eviction by providing:

• Free legal representation in eviction cases
• Mediation services between tenants and landlords
• Post-eviction assistance to help residents find housing and overcome barriers to renting again

Is It Working?

According to YourValley.net, city officials are encouraged by the results of the ongoing program. Since January 2025:

• 766 applications have been submitted
• 436 applicants were referred to services
• 386 cases have been closed
