Fort Huachuca holds an important place in American history and is one of the most important posts associated with the Buffalo Soldiers. The Buffalo soldiers were African American regiments serving the US army from 1866 to 1951. While the Buffalo Soldiers served across America, there is no fort more closely tied to them than Fort Huachuca. During their time, the Buffalo Soldiers did a number of things that helped support the U.S during a time of reconstruction.

History of the Buffalo Soldiers

During the Civil War African Americans served in the military, and they continued to serve afterwards as well. Congress passed the Army Organization Act in 1866 that created 6 African American Army Units, the 9th and 10th Calvary regiments, and 4 infantry regiments that were combined into the 24th and 25th infantry regiments in 1869, This was less than a year after the 13th amendment was ratified.

The Buffalo Soldiers were considered the first African Americans to serve in the US Army during times of peace. These units were comprised of former slaves, freemen, and Civil War soldiers. According to the Buffalo Soldiers Museum, these soldiers made up approximately 20% of US Calvery troopers.

According to the National Park Service, these units were called Buffalo Soldiers due to "...their dark, curly hair...", and "...their fierce nature of fighting." These soldiers did a number of things while serving. They escorted cattle herds and settlers, helped during conflict, and where the first caretakers of national parks.

Fort Huachuca

The 10th Calvery regiment made their way to Fort Huachuca in 1913. For decades the Buffalo Soldiers could be found on Fort Huachuca. According to the Southwest Association of Buffalo Soldiers, they acted as guards for the U.S Mexico border, helped with exploration, and helped track down bandits and outlaws.

Fort Huachuca is remembered today as "The Home of The Buffalo Soldiers". This is because at one point you could find all of the Buffalo Soldiers Units here. Their population went up to 30,000 as infantry divisions began training here during World War II. After the war, the Buffalo Soldier units were slowly deactivated.

The Buffalo Soldiers served in wars across U.S History, such as the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I and II, and many other conflicts. They played a significant role in Fort Huachuca's history as well. Despite the challenges they faced, they were courageous and showed commitment to their duty. Their service helped shape the country we know today.
