The words 'Arizona' and 'hot' are practically synonyms. That's why the best time to plan your outdoor adventures is right now before the mercury makes us think we're on the planet.

There are so many great places to hike in our state; you can find some of the best routes while the weather is still nice. Whether you're getting ready for a short morning hike or a longer, multi-day adventure, make sure you're ready for anything the Arizona trail can throw at you.

Be Prepared: Hiking and Fun in Arizona

Follow these tips to get ready for your hike.

  • Acclimate Your Body: If you've spent the last few months inside, don't just run out into the heat. Get your body ready for the added demands of hiking in warmer weather. Start doing outdoor activities that get you sweating to help you adapt to the heat.
  • Dress For Success: Lightweight, breathable clothing that wicks away sweat but shields from the sun's piercing rays will help you stay cool and sun safe. Use a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses to protect against glare.

Why It's So Hot this Summer and When You Can Expect Cool Relief

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Start hydrating before you start your trek. Try to drink at least a liter of water before you set out, and make sure you take at least a gallon of water per person along with you.

It may seem counterintuitive, but thirst alone isn't a reliable indicator of dehydration, and in the arid desert, dehydration can happen fast. Think about carrying a hydration bladder to make drinking enough water simple. This is a great trick for kids, who often forget to drink enough along the way.

  • Get Packing: It's important to tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back ahead of your journey. Pack a fully-charged cell phone, a wireless phone charger, extra food, water, and a compass. You might not have cell service, and you can't always rely on your phone to get you back before the battery quits.

Are You Even from Arizona if You've Never Done This?

If you're new to hiking, consider starting your adventure in the cooler morning or later in the evening as the sun is going down. Keep your hike short until you build up some stamina. Stay safe and enjoy the adventure!
