This Arizona ‘Clothing Optional’ Hot Spring Is Irresistibly Quaint
"I need to get away and unplug, really disconnect from the day-to-day grind."
I've been saying that phrase like a mantra for months. I've finally found a hidden gem where I was able to do exactly that.
I've heard a lot about the potential health benefits of soaking in natural mineral hot springs.
According to a study published in PubMed, there may be many benefits to soaking in mineral hot springs.
There is evidence that soaking in mineral hot springs can improve circulation, relieve pain, reduce stress, and support skin health through minerals like sulfur and silica. The effects can promote natural healing and relaxation.
Science aside, this getaway was exactly what I was looking for.

Hidden Gem: Essence of Tranquility
If you're looking for fancy, keep moving. Essence of Tranquility Mineral Hot Springs isn't a five-star, full-service hotel. There are even signs posted around the property that remind you of that fact.
Everything about the place will make you feel like you've been transported back in time. Their very basic website has a late-90s vibe, and while it'll give you all the information you need, you'll have to call to make reservations. The modest, well-maintained buildings likely date back several decades.
These Hot Springs in Arizona are 'Clothing Optional'
The accommodations give a strong youth hostel vibe. The private cabins are inexpensive and basic, but comfortable and well-appointed with all the basics: a bed, towels, air conditioning, a television with a VCR and DVD player (yes, you read that right), and wi-fi. The cabin I stayed in had a small refrigerator.
What the cabins don't have are bathrooms or showers, but there are clean shared facilities available. There's also a shared Common Room with a full kitchen. If you need entertainment, you can borrow a videotape or a DVD from the extensive collection.

Soaking in the Mineral Tubs
There are six mineral hot spring tubs. One is an open-air hot spring, but the other five have doors, and guests can choose to wear swimsuits or bathe au naturel.
There's no extra fee for using the tubs if you rent a cabin or a campsite; soaking is included for guests. There are also hourly rates for guests who don't plan to stay overnight.
The Vibe
I'm told that most of the staff are part of an extended family, and everyone we encountered was friendly and kind. There’s also a friendly group of resident cats who make the rounds every day.
Essence of Tranquility also offers body work like massage and reflexology by appointment.
Everything is very relaxed and very low-key. The facility operates year-round, but due to the higher temperatures in the summer, it attracts fewer guests. If you plan to visit in the fall or winter, be sure to make reservations well in advance.
I loved everything about my stay, and I won't hesitate to return. You can find Essence of Tranquility in Safford at 6074 South Labanon Loop Road. Visit their website for more information or call (928) 428-9312.
