Summer break is a great time for teens to learn something new. If you live in Cochise County and have a teen who’s curious about what it’s like to work in law enforcement or something fun and different to do this summer, there’s a great opportunity coming your way.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and the Sierra Vista Police Department are teaming up to host the first-ever Summer Law Enforcement Youth Academy. The academy is a hands-on program that helps young people build confidence, make new friends, and start thinking about their future paths.

This is a joint effort to give our local youth a glimpse into law enforcement while encouraging leadership and personal growth.

When and Where It’s Happening

This year’s academy will run from June 22 through June 25, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. It will be held at the ALA campus, 3039 Leadership Way, in Sierra Vista.

The youth academy is open to teens ages 15 to 18.  If your teen is interested, be sure to apply early; space is limited.

What Participants Can Expect

So what can participants expect? According to CCSO Public Information Officer Grady Butler, “Expect a little bit of everything!”

The academy blends career exploration with hands-on activities, allowing students to learn directly from professionals. There are team-building exercises, physical fitness challenges, and leadership development activities. Everything is designed to push participants in a positive, supportive environment and give them a real feel for the experience.

Along the way, they’ll also get behind-the-scenes insight into how local law enforcement operates day-to-day, plus they’ll take part in demonstrations and career-focused learning opportunities.

Building Skills That Last

More than anything, the academy is designed to be interactive. Students won’t just sit and listen; they’ll take part, learn by doing, and gain a better understanding of the teamwork and responsibility that comes with the job.

Whether or not they’re thinking about a future in law enforcement, it’s a chance to build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and learn what it means to serve their community.
