It’s the few magical weeks when the desert decides to show off. Even in a low‑rain year, Spring has delivered a surprisingly vibrant wildflower bloom across Cochise, Pima, and Santa Cruz counties, and if you look carefully, you can still catch the show.

Poppies, Lupine & Desert Marigolds, Oh, My!

The burst of color is grabbing our attention. If you drive any stretch of road around Sierra Vista, Sonoita, Bisbee, and the lower foothills of the Huachucas, you’ll spot pockets of golden poppies sharing their sun-inspired blooms.

You can’t miss the sprigs of Lupine threading its purple ribbons through the grasslands. Keep looking, and you’ll spot desert marigolds popping up in warm, cheerful clusters all along the roadside. It’s not the “super bloom” we had a few years ago, but it is a super beautiful sight to behold.

Why the Bloom Is Better Than Expected

Even though winter rainfall totals were below average, according to the National Weather Service, the timing was perfect for these showy spring flowers.

A pair of well‑spaced January and early‑February storms soaked the soil just long enough to wake up the dormant seeds. Then came the warm, steady March temperatures, which created ideal temperatures to coax the flowers out without scorching their delicate petals.

Southern Arizona’s grasslands and mid‑elevation foothills don’t need the same amount of rainfall as the rest of the Sonoran Desert. These sky-island ecosystems are perfect for the spring's subtlety.
