What Dog Breeds Do Arizona Residents Love Most

If you’ve heard me talk on the K101 morning show or followed my writing on this website, you’ve probably already figured out that I love dogs. They’re hands down my favorite people. And if you just said, “dogs are dogs, not people,” then I’m not sure we can be friends.

All kidding aside, I love dogs, and I’m not alone. Arizona loves its dogs, too. Believe it or not, I’ve had several purebred pups over the years, but every single one has been a rescue. There’s just something special about giving a dog a second chance and watching them blossom into the best version of themselves.

I would love to adopt dogs from the shelter and think everyone should start there when they’re looking for their furever pet. I never get the chance, though. When I need a new pet, I wish for one, and somehow, the right dog or cat…and even the right horse…has always shown up.

But I digress. Arizona loves its dogs, and so do I. This article is about our favorite pooches.

Arizona’s Custom-Made Pups

My personal favorite dogs are the “custom breeds”. No, I’m not visiting a breeder; I’m talking about those extra-special canines that nature has blended into absolute perfection.

My dog Latte is a chocolate Lab–Pitbull mix. She’s a smooshy, love, with a serious case of FOMO. If there is even the slightest possibility someone is handing out treats or pets, she’s first in line to make sure she gets her well-deserved share.

Nilla, my yellow Lab–and-who-knows-what, is the kind of dog who reminds you that mystery breeds are often the best breeds of all. She’s more independent than Latte, and she likes affection on her terms. She loves to play, has a million toys, and can run like the wind.

My Arizona pups are built for adventure, sunshine, and being my constant shadow around the house. I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

What Breeds Arizona Loves Most

They say the best breed is the dog you love, but according to Dogster.com, three breeds consistently rank among Arizona’s favorites:

Labrador Retriever: Labs remain among the most popular dogs in Arizona thanks to their friendly nature, intelligence, and adaptability. They’ve been among the most popular dogs in the U.S. for decades. (See! I’m not the only one who loves these crazy, treat-loving pups!)
Golden Retriever: Goldens are famously outgoing, gentle, and great with families, making them a top pick across the state. (My last gift from the Universe was a Golden. He was the best dog!!)
German Shepherd: Smart, loyal, and hardworking, German Shepherds continue to be one of Arizona’s most beloved big breeds. (The Universe has not yet granted me a German Shepherd, but I would not say no to one of these beautiful dogs!)

The Best Dog Is Your Dog

At the end of the day, the best dog isn’t the most popular breed; it’s the one snoring on your couch, wagging at the door, or nudging your hand for one more pet. If you love them and they love you, you’ve already got the perfect dog.
