Here’s How Arizona’s New Interstate 11 Could Be a Gamechanger!
If you've ever driven from Arizona to Las Vegas, you know that part of the route is a tough haul.
Did you know that US 93 has the dubious distinction of being one of Arizona's most dangerous highways? High-speed traffic, limited passing zones, and traffic signals in some parts combine to create a treacherous thoroughfare.
A proposed new route could alleviate some of the problems associated with driving. Interstate 11 (I-11) would create a direct connection from Nogales to Wickenburg, and eventually, it would extend all the way to Las Vegas.

Pros and Cons of Interstate 11 in Arizona
The new highway would create an improved route for trade and make the drive between southern and northern Arizona much safer. It would also reduce congestion caused by various bottlenecks on US 93.

The project is also controversial. Environmentalists aren't happy about the project for a number of reasons. The construction of Interstate 11 would pave over pristine desert. In the process, the project could harm wildlife and pollute the area.
The proposed route west of Phoenix would cut through the Hassayampa Valley. It could encourage massive development in the area and accelerate urban sprawl.
There's even more controversy: the route for Interstate 11 would cut through tribal lands as well as land owned by others. The proposal has already brought up protests against the possibility of the government seizing the land through eminent domain.
Interstate 11 in Arizona is on Hold
For now, the project is on hold. The Federal Highway Administration approved the corridor, but Congress has not yet allocated funding to start construction.

Legal challenges from environmental groups may also delay the project. They argue that federal agencies did not follow environmental laws when they approved the project. Until the challenges are resolved, the project will remain in limbo.
