As a kid, I lived in the Midwest. I grew up at the end of the last century, during the blizzard years. Back then, we (say it with me) walked to school. Uphill. Barefoot. Both ways.

Okay, I'm only slightly hyperbolizing. During those gray, bleak years, when the snow drifted higher than my meager four-ish feet tall, I dreamed of living somewhere, anywhere warm—at least warmer than where I was. Arizona was definitely on my short list, and while I'll admit that it's much more hospitable here in the "-ber" months, it can still get pretty chilly.

Why Am I Feeling SAD in Arizona?

I'm realizing now that cold weather isn't the only factor that makes winter a challenge for me.

I feel the challenge as soon as I start decorating for Halloween. It's the shorter, darker days, and the rush of the holidays (holidaze?) that bum me out. I'm a flip-flop and capri girl. Force me into closed-toed big-girl shoes, and I'm already grumpy. Take away my sunshine, and I fall into a funk.

A lot of us are surprised to discover that even in sunny Arizona, the winter blues can sneak up on us. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) isn’t just for folks in snowy states—it can affect desert dwellers too. Here are some tips to identify it, give yourself some grace, and fight back.

What’s the Deal with Winter Blues in Arizona?

If your only exposure to Arizona weather is Phoenix, you probably have a skewed idea of what it's really like to live here. For some reason, national weather reports show only Phoenix temperatures, so it can seem like December temps in Arizona stay around 65 to 70 degrees.

Most places in Arizona don't dig out from feet of snow, but shorter days and cooler temperatures can still mess with our mood. According to the Mayo ClinicSeasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression tied to seasonal changes. Even in Arizona, factors like reduced daylight can throw off your body’s rhythm, leaving you feeling sluggish, irritable, or just “off”.

Signs You Might Be Feeling SAD

According to Aurora Behavioral Health, "Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that follows a predictable seasonal pattern. Most often, it begins in the darker, colder months when sunlight is limited. Though it can also occur during spring or summer for some individuals."

Common symptoms of SAD include low energy, sleeping more than usual, carb cravings, and social withdrawal. It’s more than just a case of “meh”—SAD can seriously impact daily life if left unchecked.

There are some good ways to help turn that low mood around, and in Arizona, it's even easier here than in some other parts of the country.

Five Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

  • Spend Some Time Outside: Even 20 minutes of Arizona sunshine can boost serotonin.
  • Try Light Therapy: A SAD lamp mimics natural light and helps reset your body clock. You can light up that winter darkness.
  • Stay Active: It's rough when you're feeling low, but exercise, even a brisk walk, can lift your mood and energy. Make a habit of getting those endorphins flowing, and it'll help boost your mood.
  • Eat Smart: Focus on eating balanced meals with vitamin D-rich foods like salmon or fortified milk. Don't be afraid to lean into soothing comfort foods like homemade vegetable-rich soups.
  • Talk It Out: Counseling or support groups in Arizona can provide tools and connection. Find a good mental health practitioner and at least one friend who can help provide support.
