Winter Storm Warning for Cochise County

This week, the polar vortex has an icy grip on most of the country. Not one to be left out, Cochise County has decided to join the party.

Intense weather, snow, and ice in Southeastern Arizona are rare, but it happens. A few times a year, we experience rain and snow severe enough to impact our day, and that's exactly what Cochise County is in for over the next three days.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning that predicts cold temperatures, gusty winds, and light snowfall. Your best bet is to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

Snow in Cochise County: What to Expect Over the Next Three Days

The potential winter storm will hit Southeastern Arizona over the next three days. As I write this, there's a 20% chance of snow showers on Tuesday, increasing to a 40% chance by Wednesday.

It's not unusual for organizations on Fort Huachuca and Cochise County schools to be impacted by closures or late starts when winter weather arrives.

Cochise County Snowfall: The Impact

Cochise County follows a tiered system for snow days, ranging from late starts to complete closures. Fort Huachuca also adjusts operations during snow events, sometimes completely suspending regular activity.

School buses and classes could be delayed or canceled, and businesses may be encouraged to open later or close during the storm out of an abundance of caution.

Why Cochise County Closes Down During Winter Storms

Because we only experience this level of weather once or twice a year, Cochise County does not have equipment for snow removal or salting the roads, so ice and snow could become a hazard for travel.

While snow in Cochise County is uncommon, it can significantly disrupt schools, military operations, and local businesses. Stay safe and prepared during this winter weather event.

While it lasts, dress in layers and go make a miniature snowman, create some snow angels, and introduce your dog to the cold, white ground. We'll return to our warmer, normally scheduled weather by this weekend. 😎
