Winter is Coming to Cochise County

Even in Southeastern Arizona, a state that is synonymous with hot weather, many residents hoped for a white Christmas. We didn't quite achieve the winter wonderland many dreamed of on Christmas morning, but there's a good chance we'll see flurries over the first few days of the new year.

The Chance of a Frosty New Year in Southeastern Arizona

Somewhere in the back of my car is a stray mitten that got separated from its mate when I put the scarves, hats, and heavy coats away last spring. Ever since, I've been making a mental note to reunite the pair when the weather turns chilly. It looks like that time is coming, quite possibly this week.

According to AccuWeather, the winter forecast for the 2023-2024 season is calling for the chance of above-normal snowfall across most of the United States, especially in areas that normally see impressive levels of snowfall, with the notable exception of the Pacific Northwest.

The possibility of heavy snow is strengthening under the influence of this year's El Niño weather pattern, which will continue to inform our weather throughout the rest of the season.

When Will It Snow in Cochise County?

AccuWeather predicts Cochise County could get 6 to 12 inches of snow throughout the winter. Higher elevations like Bisbee and more mountainous areas could see as much as 12 inches overall.

In the next week or two, storms in the form of atmospheric rivers coming from California should bring winter storms our way. Overall, this winter is bringing colder-than-normal conditions to the entire county, including Arizona, which is great news if you're looking for skiing and other winter activities.

We may not see much snow this week, but we're likely to see some snow showers. It's unlikely we'll see enough snow accumulation to close down schools and businesses as often happens when we get snowfall in Cochise County.

That gives us all the time to locate that box of winter clothes and make sure we have mittens and gloves paired up ahead of the cold!
