How You Can Be Part of the San Pedro River BioBlitz
Do you remember the summer of 2016 when everyone was playing the mobile game Pokémon Go?
The best part was that everyone was getting outside, walking around, and "capturing" digital creatures. Here's how this new craze hitting Arizona is kind of similar:
- You can get outside
- The kids can be part of the fun
- You capture fun and interesting "items" with your phone
The bonus is, you'll learn more than ever about the world around you!

What’s the San Pedro River BioBlitz All About?
Meet the San Pedro River BioBlitz. I love getting out in nature, but I admit, I'm highly distracted by the birds, the plants, the critters. If I see something I don't recognize, I have to stop and look it up. This month, it's going to be easier than ever, and you'll be helping a great cause.
If you're ready to elevate your nature walks, download the app and get started. The San Pedro River BioBlitz is a month-long community science event taking place from November 1 to 30, 2025.
You can explore the entire San Pedro River watershed in southeastern Arizona. The goal is simple: spot, snap, and log as many plant and animal species as possible. Not only will you learn about the diverse wildlife, but you'll also help scientists better understand our region’s biodiversity.

How Can You Join the Fun?
It’s super easy, and totally free! All you need is the iNaturalist app, which you can download for free from your app store. Then, head outside, take photos of any critters or plants you see, and upload them to the app. The app will search for a similar photo, add the information, and you're on your way.
Now, you're a citizen scientist! Your observations will be verified by real-life, local scientists, and you're helping to catalog the area's biodiversity!

Where’s It Happening?
You can do this anywhere from Sierra Vista to Dudleyville and a lot of places in between. The BioBlitz spans public lands like the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, Oracle State Park, Kartchner Caverns State Park, and Ramsey Canyon Preserve.
There are also guided nature walks, birding events, and workshops throughout November. There's something for everyone, and this is a great way to enjoy our beautiful fall weather. Build some core memories with your kids and make this an adventure to remember!
