Remembering Together: Memorial Day Traditions in Southeastern Arizona
In Southeastern Arizona, Memorial Day feels quiet. With Fort Huachuca and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base nearby, this day is less about celebration and more about reflection. It reminds us of the cost of freedom and the lives given to protect it.
People still gather and have barbecues, but many in our community also take time to pause and reflect. We see this day as something more meaningful.
Remembering Those Who Gave Everything
Memorial Day is meant to honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States military. It is not about thanking living veterans or active-duty members, but about remembering those who have fallen.
This difference is important to us. It shapes how we observe the day—with respect, quiet, and the knowledge that every name represents a story, a family, and a sacrifice.

Community Gatherings of Honor
In Sierra Vista and Fort Huachuca, people come together for ceremonies that honor this purpose. At the Fort Huachuca Post Cemetery, many attend a service with traditions like laying wreaths, a rifle salute, and the sound of Taps.

Nearby, the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery holds another ceremony organized by VFW Post 9972. It is open to everyone and gives veterans, families, and neighbors a place to stand together in quiet tribute.
These moments are more than just ceremonies. They give us a chance to remember together.
