Federal Shutdown Threatens Food Aid for Thousands in Arizona
The ongoing government shutdown has already left Arizona workers on edge, and with no end in sight, the local economy is tightening its belt. Now, there's growing concern that families who are already navigating financial crises could lose their SNAP and WIC benefits.
Why Are Arizonans on Edge About SNAP and WIC?
Arizona families are bracing for potential disruptions to SNAP (food stamps) and WIC (nutrition support for women, infants, and children).
These programs help over 900,000 Arizona families access the nutrition they need, especially for growing children. The federal USDA Food and Nutrition Service provides support to these families, and losing them could create a ripple effect that's felt across the state.

Who Actually Funds These Programs?
Both SNAP and WIC are federally funded, but administered by the state of Arizona. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides the dollars, while Arizona’s Department of Economic Security (DES) handles distribution.
As tariffs and inflation combine to raise prices, the shutdown has created even more tension. If federal funding dries up, so will the benefits.
According to the USDA’s contingency plan, operations will continue “subject to the availability of funding”, and right now the outcome is anyone's guess.
The pain is already impacting Arizona. Here's How The Federal Shutdown Is Impacting Arizona's Military Towns.
What Happens If Benefits Are Delayed or Cut?
Families across Arizona could face empty cabinets and tough choices. WIC clinics may be forced to scale back services, and SNAP recipients could see delays in their monthly EBT deposits.
Many households are already living paycheck to paycheck. This could mean that children and adults skip meals or rely on already stretched food banks to make up the difference.

Could Arizona’s Economy Feel the Shock?
The local economies that support Arizona's businesses will feel the shockwaves, too. SNAP spending at local grocery stores and discretionary spending at other local businesses will fall. If benefits stop, spending drops.
Food insecurity spikes during shutdowns, and that adds a lot of pressure on nonprofits and public health systems. The potential fallout from a continued shutdown could be devastating to families and Arizona's economy.
