Whether it's related to a gunfight, a deadly mining accident, or an unsolved tragedy, the state is full of tales of lost souls and angry spirits. Some say past residents and visitors still linger in old buildings, especially in a handful of historic hotels where strange encounters are reported regularly. 3.) The Gadsen Hotel

The Gadsen Hotel in Douglas is consistently named one of Arizona's most haunted hotels. When it opened in 1907, it was a symbol of luxury and hosted notable guests including John Wayne, Amelia Earhart, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Throughout the past century, the hotel burned down, was rebuilt, and became the subject of numerous ghost stories. Room 333 is said to be the final resting place for a young boy who fell from a window, a woman who hanged herself, and "Grumpy Grandpa," who reportedly died of a heart attack. Today, visitors report strange footsteps and a female apparition standing on the staircase.

2.) Hotel Monte Vista

Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff is often regarded as one of America's most haunted hotels. It opened in 1927 along historic Route 66, and its paranormal reputation stems from decades of reported tragedies and ghost sightings. Multiple rooms, including 220, 305, and 306, are said to be haunted.

Guests and staff have claimed to hear a disembodied voice greeting them in the bar, as well as a phantom bellboy knocking on bedroom doors, and a baby crying from the basement. One of the first ghost sightings occurred in the 1940's, when a scene from Casablanca was filmed at the hotel. During filming, actor John Wayne claimed he had seen a friendly ghost.

1.) Jerome Grand Hotel

I am not being dramatic when I say every single website and article I found ranked the Jerome Grand Hotel as the most haunted hotel in Arizona. Despite its current reputation, it wasn't always a hotel. The building opened in 1927 and initially served as the United Verde Hospital. In a town where mining accidents and illnesses were common, despite its revolutionary equipment, many still died there.

When the Jerome mines closed in the 1950's, the hospital shut down as well. It sat abandoned for decades and required caretakers and security guards to prevent vandalism and break-ins. In 1980, a caretaker hanged herself in the engineering room. Something had to be done to the building.

Rather than demolish the historic building, Larry Altherr purchased it in the 1990s and spent two years converting it into a luxury hotel, which opened in 1996. However, guests soon began reporting paranormal activity, and the building's dark history only strengthened its reputation as one of Arizona's most haunted hotels.
