Experts at the Centers for Disease Control are warning that the latest strain of the new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, nicknamed "Nimbus," is presenting with some strange new symptoms.

The Omicron subvariant was first identified in China in late January and has since spread rapidly across the world.

The variant is known as NB.1.8.1, and it's highly transmissible. While experts say it doesn't seem to cause more severe illness than other variants.

Typically, the common symptoms of COVID include headache, sore throat, fatigue, sneezing, and runny nose. The new variant is coming with a twist: stomach problems.

This variant, code-named Nimbus, is showing up with some gastrointestinal issues:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Heartburn
• Bloating
• Constipation
• Stomach pain

Currently, NB.1.8.1 is the second-most common variant. The strain is active in at least 14 states, including Arizona.

When Will the Next Covid Vaccine Arrive in Arizona?

While some private and public organizations may implement mask use, it's unlikely that mask mandates, such as those seen during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, will return.

Cases may rise, but for now, hospitalizations are not increasing, and it appears that the existing vaccine continues to provide protection against severe illness.

If someone you know begins to show severe symptoms, like difficulty breathing, a persistent cough or chest pain, confusion, an inability to wake up or stay awake, or if their lips, skin, or nail beds begin to show a pale or blueish color, it's best to seek immediate medical care.
