American sporting culture is one of a kind. The experiences had at ballparks late in the afternoon are quintessential to the American experience.

Unfortunately, with programs as big as the ones like the Arizona Diamondbacks, a fair amount of waste is expected. Food is thrown out, plastic wrappers litter the ground around the stadium, and disposable cups can be seen miles away from Chase Field.

The D-Backs want a change, and they're making history doing so.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Starting in the middle of the dog days of summer, the Diamondbacks made a change. It wasn't noticeable to the average TV viewer, and even those in person may not have caught onto Chase Field's new policy.

The team has begun using reusable cups, becoming the first team in the MLB to do so. Now, these differ from the collectable souvenir cups you might get at a ball game. These cups are reused, not by the fan, but by the stadium.

How Does This Program Work?

If you make your way to a D-Backs game and grab a beverage, now you'll be given a sturdy, branded cup. Once you've finished hydrating yourself, you can make your way to any of the return receptacles found in the stadium and place the cup in a marked tray. The cups will then be transported to a cleaning facility where they will be cleaned and dried before the next game.

The program has already seen massive success, with around 1000 cups a game being recycled back to Chase Field. This is even more impressive knowing that only one restaurant throughout the whole stadium.

People have raved about the program, and it's only a matter of time before the rest of the MLB adopts the practice. This will drastically lower the waste coming from, traditionally speaking, one of the largest trash based activities in the world.
